This is Butterscotch. He is a very old man, he is 20 this year! He is the patriarch of the house although he no longer yields much power, but he can certainly kick Stella's butt in the middle of the night when she irritates him beyond his level of kind patience.
Butterscotch came to live with me when I was just a youngster. We were boarding our horses at a community stable and one of the other boarders brought him with her one day to see if anyone could adopt him.....well of course I can! I gave one look at Mom with this teeny ball of orange and white kitten fluff in my hands andshe knew he was coming home with us that night.
"Buddy" as we like to call him now mainly relies on his sense of smell because he doesn't see all that well anymore. There's only a touch of senility, but I actually think that's his way of letting us know that he just doesn't care what anyone thinks. If he wants to cry in the middle of the night because he's woken up and forgotten where he is and wonders why it's dark...then so be it. He's my old man and he'll be around until he just doesn't want to be anymore.
Buddy had a twin brother named Scrounge. I rescued Scrounge from the neighbor boys that abused and tortured him relentlessly. One day, I just went over to their house and took Scrounge and said, "he's mine now" and that was that. Scrounge was short-haired, but their markings were identical. I doubt they were really brothers but it was uncanny how similar the two of them were.
They were mainly outside cats (of their own choosing) and would only come into the house in the wintertime. They kept the barns free of mice and caught lots of birds. One day a mean-spirited Blue Jay buzzed Scrounge and turned the tables on him. Scrounge was a good cat and he lived a long time for as wild as he was. He just disappeared for a while, which wasn't unusual, except I had a dream that I knew where to find him and that he wasn't alive. The next morning I went to the property next door to our ranch and found him exactly where my dream told me I would in the exact spot and in the exact position. I buried him there because that's what he would have wanted. That property was his stomping ground and I
knew he wouldn't be disrupted for many years.
Buddy is an inside cat now, but he still goes outside when he really wants to. He can still stalk the neighborhood cats and keep them off of his property. But lately, there has been a pretty little calico coming around and he's not minded that at all! Her nameis Tiffany and she hangs out at the back door as well as on the fence next to his bedroom window. It's very cute!
Buddy has a new student now and her name is Stella. She keeps Buddy young and with purpose. Without her his life would be a bit boring. He would, however, get some sleep if she weren't around!
